Why study BA(Hons) Creative Media Design?
Our new BA(Hons) Creative Media Design is for students who relish the exciting opportunities offered by rapidly developing technologies. You will enjoy the playful use of online media and being stretched and challenged - creatively, imaginatively, intellectually and technically.
This course pushes boundaries. Focusing on digital media for online, networked and mobile platforms, you will work on digital production tasks and nearly live briefs in all three years. Projects could involve mobile or location-based apps, physical computing or experimental video and photography, for contexts ranging from handheld devices to physical media installations for exhibitions.
You will be well placed to build a successful career in today's fast-moving media industry with excellent employment prospects following graduation.

About this course

Placements
Bristol has a unique approach to media production, with a rich vein of media arts, innovation and activism. There are opportunities to work with companies in and around Bristol throughout the degree. Work experience will be available at a range of local companies and groups.
You will be encouraged and supported to take a work placement in Year two and there is an opportunity to take a work experience module. In Year three, you will embark on a range of self-initiated projects that may involve working with and for external organisations.

Course programme

Content

Emphasis is placed on a creative approach, experimentation and critical reflection, providing opportunities for you to experience a range of media production techniques, processes, technologies and concepts.

The course has a number of strands, which progressively build your media production skills as well as your creative and critical development.

You will undertake both group and individual production work throughout the three years. In the final year, you will undertake self-directed work, culminating in an ambitious final project and a work placement.

Year one

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Convergent Media - interactive, multimedia moving and still image production for online and mobile distribution.
  • Media Archaeology - exploring the history of media and the physicality of media in project work and written work.
  • Media and Design Contexts - an introduction to locative computing, interface design and mobile web production.
  • Pervasive Media 1 - network culture and the nature of work in the digital age, theory and application.

Year two

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Pervasive Media 2 - designing location based mobile applications that explore interactive storytelling, mapping, game play and participation.
  • Interface and Experience Design - design for interaction, interfaces and user testing.
  • Media Enterprise and Environments - professional development, work placement and portfolio development.
  • Data Worlds - mobile app development and interactive video exploring the world of data.

Final year

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Creative Media Design Final Group Project
  • Creative Media Design Final Individual Project

You will also choose two from the following optional modules:

  • Games, Simulation and Media
  • Media and Culture Dissertation
  • Hardware Hacking

Please also note this structure is for the full-time course delivery only. For part-time delivery, the same modules will be studied. However, the structure will differ.

Learning and Teaching

The Creative Media Design award is taught through workshops, lectures and discussion groups. You will be expected to contribute meaningfully and critically to you peer group, developing a high level of critical reflection that is informed by research and your growing knowledge of the subject area.

Throughout the course you will have access to experienced tutors and visiting professionals who will discuss your work with you and offer support, guidance and suggestions on how to develop your portfolio of work in readiness for employment.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the course, including essays, individual and group projects and group presentations. There are no exams. You will engage in written critical evaluation of your work where you are expected to critique and analyse and relate it to the broader context of media theory and creative practice.

Marks from modules at Levels two and three will contribute towards your overall degree classification.
