Whether learning for fun or wishing to further career development, this course is designed to further develop skills and understanding of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Students must have completed the Beginners course offered by the college – or have a basic knowledge of Creative Suite. If students are quite good at Photoshop, but have no previous experience of Illustrator or InDesign, then the Beginners course would be recommended.

What modules are covered?

Each student will have a Macintosh to work on. This is not a barrier to those who use PC’s as the software runs virtually identically on both Mac and PC.

o The course is a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and practical examples. Adobe have branded their software as Creative Suite (CS) to identify the fact that it has greater integration with other Adobe software as it has evolved (better use of keyboard short cuts, file formats etc).
o Adobe Photoshop CS6: is the industry standard bitmap paint and photo-editing application. It is used in a wide variety of ways including, manipulating photographs, creating photo-montages, photo-retouching, creating web graphics and visualising.
o Adobe Illustrator CS6: is a vector graphics drawing package. It is commonly used to create graphics and drawings such as logos, maps, diagrams and illustrations. It can work with bitmap images and type but does not easily allow artwork to be generated other than one page at a time.
o Adobe InDesign CS6: is quickly becoming the industry standard page layout program. It is used to create artwork as varied as posters, point of scale, packaging, catalogues, brochures and newspapers. InDesign imports images and text, created in Photoshop, Illustrator or Work, to be laid out as artwork ready to go to print or exported to other media.

The course will consist of demonstrations to familiarise learners with a new feature of the software. This is then built on through workshop sessions where learners are encouraged to develop this skill through exercises. There will also be the scope for self-motivated or directed learning where students are encouraged to work on a small “personal project” allowing them to implement new techniques and approaches and to consolidate their knowledge further.
