This course provides you with the opportunity to study two main subject areas; Criminology and Criminal Justice. Criminology examines theories and evidence relating to crime, criminals and victims, while Criminal Justice studies explore the various responses to crime and victims, from informal to formal legislative measures of social control and crime prevention; and examine the way in which the criminal justice system works from policing through to imprisonment.

About this course


The course aims to enable understudies to: Identify and apply key theories and concepts in Sociology.

Understand the origins and development of social institutions in contemporary society.

Demonstrate an understanding of social continuities, change and diversity.

Discuss ways in which social life is ordered and shaped in the context of culture, social identities and social interaction.


Career prospects for graduates of this course include policing, the prison service, criminal intelligence, community support, probation and law, teaching and research, jobs in voluntary sector organisations and public administrations.

Course programme

Year 1 In the first year of your course you are introduced to the main concepts and areas of study. In addition to issues in Criminology and Criminal Justice you are encouraged to study in areas which complement your degree scheme e.g. in Social Policy, Sociology and Law. Core modules: Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice Doing Social Research Social Science Perspectives Introduction to Health and Welfare Understanding Society plus 20 credits from Social Sciences or other Schools Years 2 and 3 In your second and third years the core criminology and criminal justice modules provide a thorough grounding in key theoretical perspectives, research methodologies and criminal justice issues. You may choose from the range offered elsewhere within the School. You will also work independently (with supervision) on an extended piece of work as a dissertation. Year 2 At level 2 you will continue the study of core subjects related to your discipline, begin your dissertation study and select a limited number of options. Compulsory modules: Methods of Social Research Dissertation Preparation Theories of Crime and Control Crime and Justice in Modern Britain Contemporary Social Debates plus one optional module in Social Science Year 3 At level 3 you will continue the study of subjects related to your discipline. Compulsory module: Dissertation Regulating Society Crime and Punishment Crime and Power Crime and the Media plus 20 credits of optional modules from the School
