This course explores issues of identity, discrimination and conflict; the dynamics and meanings everyday actions and beliefs; the changing nature of social relations locally and globally and the consequent implications for the forms of crime and deviance.
In the first year, you'll cover core sociological and criminological theories,social issues and the criminal justice system in England and Wales.
In Year 2 you'll deepen your understanding of social theory and its application to real world problems and advocacy. You'll explore crime control measures in the form of policing and punishment, and take two additional option modules based on your own area of interest.
In the final year, you can take advanced modules exploring contemporary concerns of the social world including an examination of gender, race and class in relation to life experience and outcomes; global terrorism and transnational crime. You can also further your research skills by completing a dissertation in an area of your own criminological or sociological interest.

About this course
You'll be introduced to criminology and sociology as related fields of study, developing your knowledge and understanding of the two disciplines.
The course will enable you to make connections between theories of society and human behaviour with reference to social problems, crime, victimisation, crime control and punishment.
You'll develop a sound knowledge of the institutions, processes and legal foundations of the criminal justice system in England and Wales.
You'll develop a knowledge of and sensitivity to the complexity and diversity of social processes and cultures in different groups and societies.
The course will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills to critically engage with public debates about social problems and policy, particularly in relation to crime and responses to crime.

BTEC National: Distinction, Merit, Merit (DMM) from a social science related BTEC Extended Diploma
Access Diploma: Pass
Plus: GCSE candidates are normally required to hold five GCSE subjects grades A*-C including Mathematics and English Language (or comparable numeric score under the newly reformed GCSE grading)
A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall with no element below 5.5
