Course programme

Criminology is an area of contested meaning, where competing theoretical perspectives meet. Crime, criminal activity and our responses to it are constant concerns of contemporary societies. The criminology degree seeks to address questions that include: How is crime defined? What do we know about why people commit crime? How should we deal with those offenders we know about? How might we reduce crime generally? Definitive answers may be hard to come by but the search for understanding and explanation is all part of the study of criminology with the ultimate aim of safer communities and crime reduction.

Teaching/Learning

Learning and teaching across the whole course consists of lectures and a variety of other learning opportunities including seminars, tutorials, workshops and IT laboratory work.

Assessment

Students will be assessed by a mixture of essays, presentations, examinations, and a dissertation.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may enter a variety of careers within agencies of the criminal justice system (e.g. police, probation service, youth offending teams, the prison service, the voluntary sector etc.); some of these occupations may require further professional training to complement a degree.
