"Croupier means the employee, generally of a casino, who takes care of accepting the bets of the players, serving at the gaming table, checking the legality of the players' bets and paying the winnings. The word derives from chevalier accroupi which means ""crouched knight"" and indicated the person, usually belonging to the cavalry or the nobility, crouched next to the parlor games to serve the participants. The dealer usually receives a fixed fee for his work from the game organizer. The tips that players generously leave usually flow into a mutual fund to be later divided among all the dealers and can be even more substantial than the salary. The croupier is a fundamental and absolutely indispensable figure for a casino: is the intermediary between the player and luck, the one who takes care of the technical management of the game table and adherence to internal procedures.
