Course programme
The Cura! Successful Exhibition Curating course will provide students with practical experience of the curation, co-ordination and installation of an art exhibition at a gallery. During lively sessions students will work together to curate an exhibition, working as a team to select works and organise, market, programme and install an art exhibition in a pre-eminent gallery space. This is an interactive course, and students are encouraged and expected to contribute and steer the course outcomes.
Under the guidance of your tutor you will learn how to:
- Conceive exhibitions within practical limitations.
- Make decisions within tight deadlines.
- Consider and enact the artwork selection process.
- Consider the practical aspects of exhibitions, such as hanging, lighting and labelling.
- Deal with artists, preparing agreements, condition reports and logistics.
- Design an invitation card, write a press release, and prepare a mailing list and mail-out.
- Work individually, collaboratively and as a team.
- Manage a private view and other events.
- Engage with sponsorship and other financial considerations.
You will achieve an understanding of the key factors and skills involved in developing and putting on an exhibition, receiving a sound basis in both theory and practice. Unusually for a course of this short duration, students will gain genuine experience of putting on and running an exhibition, as the course will culminate in a 10-day exhibition at a London gallery with a Private View night.
