About this course

Standard entry to this course requires a minimum of 48 UCAS points from a recognised level 3 qualification in a related subject (i.e. two A2s at grade D, extended diploma PPP, or an Access to HE diploma). You are expected to hold GCSE English and maths at grade 4/C or equivalent. We welcome applicants who do not match standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate ability to study this subject at university level and who can evidence relevant experience.

Course programme

Year 1

Emphasis is placed on studio-based dance classes. Modules include: contemporary dance; ballet; improvisation and choreography; anatomy and physiology; performance and repertoire; contextual studies; a collaborative project; a choreographic performance project; and dance techniques including jazz dance and commercial dance. You will also take fitness classes to include yoga, conditioning, and strength training.

You will also receive a vibrant programme of guest lecturers and master-classes to maintain skills at the cutting edge of thinking and practice and provide essential industry links. Previous visiting companies include Mark Bruce Dance Company; Phoenix Dance Theatre; James Wilton Dance Company; Bonachela Dance Company; Frantic Assembly; Aakash Odedra Company; and Foundation for Community Dance as well as a range of local community dance artists.

Year 2

First year modules continue and develop in year two. Students will undertake a work placement as part of the community dance practice module to develop skills in teaching and leading dance.
All students will participate in the HE Arts Fest at the end of the course where you will have opportunities to showcase your choreography and technical skills through performances in a variety of styles.

Additional information

The work is assessed in a variety of ways. Practical assessments take the form of studio/theatre-based performance. In addition to practical work, students are assessed via presentations and written coursework (e.g. portfolios and essays).
