Dance makes a distinctive contribution to the education of all students in that it uses movement, which is the most fundamental mode of human expression. GCSE is normally a 2 year course. Candidates taking GCSE Dance at Joseph Chamberlain College complete the course soon after a 2 term intensive study period. Ideally candidates should have or be re-taking GCSE English (grade C).

What are the main features of this course?
Dance is a distinct art form with its own history, body of knowledge, aesthetic values, cultural contexts and artistic products which draws on a variety of stimuli and other art forms to enhance the creative process. Creating, performing and appraising dances are the three strands in which experiences are framed on this one year course of study.

Hours of Lessons per Week : 3.7
Indicative Group Size : 15

How is the course assessed?
Candidates will be assessed on work in the following 3 areas: Performance: i) show knowledge and understanding of performance ii) show in dance performance the level of technical competence and expression that has been achieved. Composition: i) show knowledge and understanding of composition ii) compose dances which successfully communicate the artistic intention of the choreographer. Appreciation: i) show knowledge and understanding of context ii) describe, interpret and evaluate dance showing accuracy, imagination and sensitivity.
