A unique Masters programme in which YOU decide the focus and subject of your postgraduate studies in the diverse area of Arts and Creative Technologies.
It is impossible to describe this course, because it is different for every single student. You are the person who decides what you want to do (as long as it’s at a postgraduate level of study).
All you need to get started is a project that you want to tackle over the course. This could be a book or film project, it could be compiling a portfolio targeted for a specific job, it could be work for an exhibition or it could be something you always wanted to find out more about (and these are just a few examples).
Armed with your proposal we will find you a subject-specific mentor, who will help you put together a Learning Contract, which is your own bespoke course design, which will allow you to complete your project. You can use your own experience and interests to explore a subject through work-experience. You can also use the resources of the faculty –whether it be teaching and research expertise or workshop facilities – to help you. You even pick your own title for the course.
Most of the content of this award is up to you. There are two shared core modules, in which you design your Learning Contract and learn about research methods, and everything else is negotiated by you.

pg00002 EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF THE PROGRAMME The Master by Negotiated Study [MaNS] offers highly motivated and appropriately qualified students the opportunity to propose, negotiate and pursue a programme of study within our postgraduate modular framework. The programme extends and develops your specialisation at undergraduate level or área of professional practice. The aims of this award are: 1. To provide a post-graduate programme of study for students who are able to articúlate a clear research/project proposal within their chosen subject área within the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies. 2. To provide a rigorous academic framework that will underpin a student's ability to learn independently and advance their knowledge, understanding and professional practice within their particular specialism, within the Faculty of Arts and Creative Technologies. 3. To provide the opportunity to conduct research within or across a variety of disciplines, and to enhance the employability of students by recognising the valué of interdisciplinary work and the specialised nature of the content of individual student's negotiated programmes. What is distinctive about this programme? MaNS is an exceedingly flexible Masters degree. Its essence allows you, in conjunction with the course leader and subject-specific tutors, to design a Masters course that meets your needs and interests. This programme also allows you to decide whether you are working towards an MA or an MSc qualification: If your course of studies focuses upon more artistic or humanistic approaches to your subject and uses predominantly qualitative methodologies you will be on track for the MA. The methods you might want to use here include lateral thinking, grounded theory or action research, for example. If your approach is more technical or scientific you will qualify for the MSc. Here you will focus on predominantly quantitative methodologies, using approaches such as hypotheses, testing, analysis and evaluation as a framework for understanding. If your programme ends up showing no clear preference for either of these two directions, your Masters Project will determine which one will be awarded. The degree is path-breaking in the way that it accommodates an interdisciplinary cohort of students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds. </div>
