Course Overview:
This course is suitable for support staff working in the health and social care sector. It has a particular relevance for those working with older service users, including those working with stages of pre-senile dementia.
This course provides information that will enable students to achieve a broad underpinning knowledge of the subject, together with practical skills that will enable them to support people experiencing dementia.
At the conclusion of the programme, the expected learning outcomes are that the student will:
Recognise the signs and symptoms of a variety of dementias
Understand the difficulties and challenges faced by people with dementia and identify the best ways to support them.
Empathise with people experiencing dementia
Feel more confident when working with service users who have a dementia
Have the knowledge and skills to enhance the quality of life of people with dementias

Progression Opportunities:
This qualification is part of a suite of qualifications in dementia care. The knowledge and skills gained through the achievement of this qualification can also be mapped to the Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care.
Entry Requirements:
This qualification is suitable for people aged 16+ who either work in the sector or who are informal and family carers.
All applicants will need a genuine interest in people and should demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm. Students need to be reliable, honest, trust worthy, well motivated and self-reliant.

Course programme
Course Delivery:
Month 1: Induction and enrolment
Month 2: Unit 1 – ‘Understanding Dementia’
Month 3: Unit 2 – ‘Understanding Person-Centred Dementia Care’
Month 4: Unit 3 – ‘Understanding Challenging Behaviour in the Context of Dementia’
Month 5: Unit 4 - ‘Applying a Person-Centred approach to Dementia Care’
Month 6: Completion workshop
The course is delivered in the form of taught sessions over 12 months and will involve a significant amount of hands on activity with additional work outside the sessions to develop content and materials for completion of the course.
Students will be expected to complete a workbook at the end of each session which will be assessed by a suitably qualified tutor from the health & social care team.
To achieve the qualification, students must achieve at least 21 credits – 15 of which must come from the four mandatory units and the remaining six from the optional units. The topics covered by the units are wide-ranging and include:
- Understand the process and experience of dementia.
- Enable rights and choices of individuals with dementia whilst minimising risks.
- Understand and enable interaction & communication with individuals with dementia.
- Equality, diversity and inclusion in dementia care practice.
