This course aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of caring for individuals with dementia.

Enables you to evaluate the principles and practices of dementia care, and develop the knowledge to promote the awareness of dementia, which in-turn will influence patient safety and team performance.

You should be able to apply what you learn to your own discipline and appraise the need for timely assessment and appropriate, individualised interventions for patients with varying levels of dependency.

You will also explore your own practice and critically reflect on how patient safety, team performance, and inter-professional working can be improved.

About this course

This course is aimed at health practitioners who wish to extend their knowledge and skills in caring for people with dementia, and their carers.

To apply for this course you must be a healthcare professional currently employed in a relevant area of practice, interacting on a regular basis with people who have dementia.

Course programme

The module includes the exploration of:

  • Assessment and interventions for patients who have an altered physical status
  • Altered psychological status and altered social status secondary to dementia
  • The concept of patient-centred care in dementia and an understanding of the patient journey to ensure specific needs such as care planning and communication are met
  • The roles of relatives, friends, and the extended healthcare team in supporting a patient with dementia

On successful completion of the module, you should be able to:

  • Critically appraise and integrate evidence-based knowledge to a multi-professional team approach for person-centred dementia care
  • Demonstrate the application of in-depth knowledge and understanding of the neurobiological basis of dementia and link these changes to the clinical presentation of the disease
  • Discuss and critically analyse the key issues contributing to effective person-centred dementia care
  • Demonstrate appropriate patient management, promoting maximum independence and safety within the context of your own professional discipline.

This module is available at Level 6 and Level 7 as well as being available without credits attached. Students choosing this option will be awarded a certificate of Continuing Professional Development hours but will not be required to undertake the final assessment.

All students completing the module will also be awarded a certificate for completion of Tier 3 of the Dementia Core Skills Education and Training Framework - Leadership in Dementia Care.
