About this course

This degree will enhance your knowledge and understanding of Dental Hygiene which can be applied in a clinical setting. The completion of a the thesis in year 3 will provide students with research and management skills to equip you to consider alternate employment settings such as allied healthcare management or teaching posts.

All applicants must hold an approved dental hygiene qualification and a minimum of 3 years clinical experience post qualification as a dental hygienist.

Students take modules to the value of 60 credits for each year of study totalling 180 credits for the three years..

The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits). All modules are compulsory.

Core modules

All modules are compulsory and completed primarily online but there will be some compulsory residential weeks at the institute. In the first year, there will be two non-consecutive residential weeks. In the second and third year, there will be one residential week. Students must be physically present at UCL Eastman during these times. Note: Costs of accommodation and board are not covered.

Dissertation/report

In the third year of study all students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation project of 10,000-12,000 words (60 credits).

Teaching and learning

The modules will primarily be delivered online with block teaching at UCL of practical skills, lab work, group seminars and discussions. Learning methods will be through didactic lectures, discussion sessions and teacher led seminars. Assessment takes place through clinical cases, written assessments, online quizzes, discussion forums and oral examinations.

While most of the programme is delivered online, students will be required to attend the UCL Eastman for two weeks in their first year, one week in their second and third years and attend for all exam dates.
