More information
Areas of specialisation
The degree scheme in English at Aberystwyth aims to offer students an understanding and enjoyment of literature from the Medieval period to the present day as well as offering an excellent range of ‘option’ modules which include modern poetry, African literature in English, British and American film, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval literature, Elizabethan drama, Arthurian literature, good representation of women’s writing in all historical periods, and Welsh writing in English. The Department also offers a thriving degree scheme in Creative Writing, allowing students to learn about the techniques and skills of narrative prose, poetry, and other forms of writing. Students are able to develop their literary talents through the many writing workshops and poetry readings organised by the student-led English society and the Department of English, and meet writers and professionals in the area of creative writing.
Description
The Department of English was rated ‘excellent’ in the last Assessment of Teaching Quality, and it received a grade 4 for its research in the last Research Assessment Exercise. We are a medium-sized department of 20 full-time staff, and overall, we enrol about 170 students to our Single and Joint Honours undergraduate programmes each year. This balance of staff and students ensures that we can give our students a great deal of personal attention. We are also committed to ‘small-group’ teaching.
