This exciting new apprenticeship in Design is made up of two main components, a knowledge qualification which is usually studied at college on a part time basis (e.g) half or one day per week, and the competence based qualification which is assessed in the work place against the units of the qualification.

Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design

(Knowledge based component - college)

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design is a 60-credit and 360-guided-learning hour (GLH) qualification that consists of

four mandatory units plus optional units that provide for a combined total of 60 credits (where at least 45 credits must be at level 3 or above).

Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Design

(competence component)

The Edexcel Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Design (QCF) recognises the skills, knowledge and understanding of learners and allows them to gain a job ready qualification in the workplace that relates to their job area and promotes good working practice.

This qualification requires achievement of a minimum of 49 credits. 29 credits are to be achieved from the Mandatory units and a minimum of 20 credits from the Optional units in groups 2 and 3. Learners may achieve a maximum of 6 credits from the units in Group 3 Business Optional units.

How will I be assessed?

The work-based part of the qualification will be assessed using a portfolio of evidence and observation by an assessor.  The knowledge-based part will be assessed through project work set at college.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

GCSEs grades A* to C in English and Maths (the standard requirement for entry level office grade positions) or equivalent, or completion of a Level 2 qualification in art or design, or employer’s confidence in individual’s ability.

What can I do after this course?

Junior roles within the Design industry such as graphic designer, product designer and technical illustrator.
