About this course

as advanced knowledge within the interdisciplinary academic field of sustainable development, with a particularly thorough knowledge of political, anthropological, socio-economic and cultural-historical perspectives.
has acquired specific in-depth knowledge on the theme and theory chosen for his or her master’s thesis.
has thorough knowledge of interdisciplinary theories and methods applied to the research of culture, environment and sustainability.
can apply knowledge to current challenges within the field of sustainable development.
can analyze the academic challenges and problems of interdisciplinary approaches to research and scholarship concerning sustainable development, on the basis of this field’s characteristics and theoretical assumptions.
can analyze existing theories and methods of interdisciplinary scholarship in an independent manner, using political, anthropological, socio-economic and culturalhistorical perspectives within the context of sustainability.
can choose and apply appropriate interdisciplinary methods for research on sustainability issues in an independent manner.
can analyze and deal critically with wide-ranging sources of information and complex theoretical approaches that are applicable to interdisciplinary research on sustainability, and formulate scholarly arguments.
can carry out an independent limited research project within the field of sustainable development under supervision and in accordance with applicable norms for research ethics within the chosen methodology, such as ethnography, interview techniques, discourse analyses, etc.

In the second semester you can choose to have an intership in a relevant organisation or company as part of your degree. You can also write your master's thesis in cooperation with an external partner. Through this you can get valuable contacts and network that can be useful when you apply for a job after graduation. You can also prepare for working life along the way by participating in career fairs, job search and interview workshops, and career counseling offered to students. Or you can learn what former students do by shadowing a former SUM student at work for a day.
