Course programme

Module description

Diabetes is recognised internationally as a major health problem. The estimated diabetes prevalence for 2010 had risen to 285 million, representing 6.4% of the world's adult population. A prediction has also been given that by 2030 the number of people with diabetes will have risen to 438 million (International Diabetes Federation (IDF), 2011).

About this module

In the UK alone an overwhelming 2.8 million people exist with diabetes and there are up to another 850,000 people with diabetes who have the condition and don't know it (Diabetes UK, 2011). The associated cardiovascular disease, neuropathies, psychosocial aspects and other related health problems all contribute to a global epidemic that has a huge impact for the patient, family, health care providers and International resources.

This module will provide structured materials which will enable the practitioner to examine disease processes of both Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, current modes of diagnosis, assessment, treatment and contemporary management of the disease in adults.

It will deliver a specialist focus on self management which will enable you to provide an optimum care package for the individual with Diabetes.

Delivered online, there are a variety of learning packages used to explore aspects of diagnostic reasoning, pharmacology and medicines management to enable students to develop a sound knowledge base to support their clinical practice. The use of a case study within the assessment will facilitate application of the relevant evidence base within the your own clinical area so enhancing links between theory and practice.
