Requirements

Requirements for graduation in the College of Arts and Sciences include:
The College of Arts and Science requires proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate (2220 or equivalent) level or sign language through the advanced (2614 or equivalent) level.

Requirements for Progression to the Upper-Division Major:
Students must complete at least 52 hours of credit with a minimum grade point average of 2.0, at least half the required General Education hours, including English composition and mathematics, or an A.A. Degree.

Academic Performance
All State Common Program Prerequisites listed as Term 1-4 Milestones must be completed with a “C” range (C minus, C, or C+) grade or better. Students earning less than the necessary grade in any of these courses will be required to retake those courses until the standard is met.

Note: retaking a course may delay graduation and incur increased fee liability (i.e., repeat course surcharge and excess credit surcharge).

All courses applicable to the major must be completed with a “C minus“ grade or better. Students must earn a "C minus" or better in the first course of a two-semester sequence to continue that sequence (or file an undergraduate appeal with the Student Affairs Office, to be reviewed by the Undergraduate Advising and Awards Committee, to request taking the year-sequence course out of sequence).

A student who has received more than three unsatisfactory grades (U, F, D minus, D, or D+) in courses required for the major, excluding the Term 1-4 State Common Program Prerequisites milestone courses, taken after enrolling at FSU will not be permitted to graduate with a degree in that major.

Collateral Coursework: (12 hours)

The Chemical Science major requires completion of all the courses listed below. These courses may also be used to satisfy General Education courses or towards the minor.

Math through Calculus I: MAC 2311 (4).
Either PHY 2053C, 2054C (4, 4) College Physics A and B, or PHY 2048C, 2049C (5, 5) General Physics A and B (calculus based).

Minor Coursework: 12 hours or more.
Chemical Science majors must complete the required hours/courses for an approved minor field or 15 hours in an interdepartmental minor approved by the Department of Chemistry. Frequently Chemical Science majors will complete a second major, which satisfies this requirement.

Computer Skills Competency: CHM 3120L satisfies this requirement.

Oral Communication Competency: 0-3 hours
Students must demonstrate the ability to orally transmit ideas and information clearly. This requirement may be met with an approved college-level course. See:
