Why study BSc(Hons) Digital Media?
A range of design principles and delivery technologies underpins all digital media whether these are movies and music, print and broadcast, or commerce and interactive entertainment. The growth of digital media uses range from in-car to screenless interaction, from urban social networks to mobile commerce in the developing world.
Why study our course?
This BSc(Hons) Digital Media course introduces you to the design contexts and development opportunities in use and on the horizon for digital media creation and delivery. You will learn the fundamentals of development - from programming, web technologies and design and visualisation techniques, to rich media creation, multi-platform deployment, physical-computing, testing and project management. You will develop a strong grounding in industry standard processes, technologies and their application. You will learn about the art and science of communication while developing an understanding of the ethical, commercial and legal environment in which the industry operates.
During the first year of this course you'll study at City of Bristol College. You can access UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus and all the facilities and accommodation available to our students. From the second year of your course onwards you'll be based at UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus.
Real world experience
To enhance your professional skills and experience, you will start building your portfolio by working on live briefs with local businesses from day one. There will be an opportunity to improve your industry knowledge and contacts through networking evenings with regional businesses, and attending presentations by visiting professionals. And, where possible, we will arrange for industry software developers to come in and run student projects.

Course programme

Content

You will spend your initial year at City of Bristol College. From the second year of your course onwards, you will be based at UWE Bristol's Frenchay campus.

Foundation Year (Year zero)

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Foundation Maths for Computing
  • Professional and Communication Skills
  • Computer Architecture
  • Internet Systems
  • IS Fundamentals
  • Programme Design and Implementation
  • Programming Project.

You will study the Foundation year alongside students from our other Computer Sciences and Creative Technology courses.

Year one

In the first year, you will acquire skills in fundamental areas such as visual design, media technologies and web development. You will also receive teaching geared towards helping you understand the principles behind interaction design, multimedia production and how best to communicate information.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Introduction to Web Platforms
  • Design in Context
  • Multimedia Studio
  • Web Design Studio
  • Graphic Design.

Year two

In this year, you will build on the foundations laid in earlier years and develop your skills in design for web platforms, Multimedia Authoring and Human-Computer Interaction, as well as other specialist applications and techniques.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Data, Schemas and Applications
  • Web Design Principles
  • User Experience
  • 3D Technologies for the Web.

Final year

The final year brings together all the ideas and skills acquired so far. You will study core modules in Professional and Policy Issues, advanced web topics, development for mobile devices and 3D Modelling and Animation. You will also undertake a project in which you will research an area of interest and develop an appropriate digital media application. This will serve to consolidate and extend your knowledge, as well as establish your practical expertise.

You will study the following compulsory modules:

  • Advanced Topics in Web Development 1
  • Creative Technologies Project
  • Interaction Design
  • Ethical and Professional Issues in Computing and Digital Media.

In addition, you will choose from the following optional modules, according to credit requirements:

  • Professional Experience
  • Advanced Topics in Web Development 2
  • Mobile Applications
  • Audio-Visual Production.

If you wish to specialise in Web Development, Media Production or Games Development, there are alternative modules specific to each pathway.

Learning and Teaching

Throughout the course, you will develop knowledge and skills through a combination of computer-based practical work, theoretical discussion, classroom-based exercises and self-directed study. The aim is for you to become accomplished in practical work involving the creation, development and deployment of interactive media for the web. It will also equip you to be able to discuss the principles behind this work.
