You must hold the NCFE Level 3 Diploma in Counselling or an equivalent certificate from an alternative awarding body.  Learners require a good level of oral and written English to participate in the course, ideally Level 2 (GCSE) which is required to read handouts, and write assignments.  You will also be expected to produce assignments in a word-processed format.

You will be required to attend an initial assessment and discuss your enrolment prior to enrolling with your counselling tutor. The programme has a Person-Centred core model and philosphy, however also includes learning about other therapeutic approaches and contemporary developments within the broader spectrum of Person-Centred / Humanistic models. Our experienced and supportive team will work with you to develop your therapeutic skill, confidence and resilience in your work with cleints on supervised practice, which runs alongside attendance at university. The programme has been designed to equip you to work well iwth a wide range of clients in different settings and to acquire and develop a range of professional skills applicatble to a variety of related roles and employment opportunities.

Who is the course for?

This part time Dip (HE) in Counselling offers the opportunity to gain the essential knowledge, in-depth self-understanding, and practical abilities to become an eithical and effective couonselling practitioner. The programme fulfils the current training criteria for application for accreditation as a counsellor / psychotherapist with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy post-qualification. It is not suitable for people looking for psychological assistance to deal with personal issues.

How is the course organised

The course runs for 3 years, one day per week for 7 hours and a requirement for 2 mandatory days as part of the personal development module. In the 2nd and 3rd year, alongside studies, a requirement of a minimum of 100 supervised hours of counselling practice with clients ina suitable counselling placement. As part of personal develpment, learners are expected to have 10 personal counselling sessions over the course of their studies.
The course consists of a praticipative approach using tutor input, role plays, discussions, independent research, group and paired work, case studies and demonstrations backed up with handouts to reinforce learning. This includes skills practice which will be assessed through observation and reflection. Personal commitment, ability to meed deadlines and regular attendance is essential.

How will my progress be assessed?

Written assignments with evidence which demonstrates the achievement of all learning outcomes and assessment criteria associated with each module. Evidence will also be gathered by assessor observation and witness testimony. Internal moderation is in line with the calendar dates of the University of Cumbria.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

Learners studying this course may do so as they wish to progress towards further qualifications or may be learners who wish to study the programme in order to complement other programmes (such as Health and Social Care or Children's Care, Learning and Development)

What final qualification will I get if I am successful?

  • Eligible for membership catergory MBACP of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
