Diploma of Higher Education (Social Sciences)

KEY FEATURES
This two year qualification links Central College with the University of Strathclyde?s Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences. Successful learners will be awarded the Diploma of Higher Education in Social Sciences by the University of Strathclyde. The subjects and course content have been specifically designed to allow successful learners to apply for articulation into the 3rd year of the BA Social Sciences degree in the Faculty. Flexibility has been built into the course and so it may be possible for certain candidates, who at the end of 2 years do not meet the requirements of the Diploma award, to be awarded a Certificate of Higher Education in Social Sciences by the University.

COURSE CONTENT

A selection of core units includes:

YEAR 1:
Politics; Psychology; Sociology; Economics

YEAR 2:
During this year, two of the four principal subjects studied in year one, Sociology and Politics, are developed in more detail. These subjects are then pursued further in third year of the BA programme at the university.

NOTE:
Applicants who attain 1 or 2 Higher Grade passes can usually be placed in HND in Social Sciences.

PROGRESSION
The main focus of the course is to allow articulation to

3rd year of the BA Degree course in Social Sciences within the Faculty of Law, Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Strathclyde
. Whilst there learners will hone their negotiating, problem solving and debating skills and on graduation may move into both public and private sectors. Areas include the health service, community work, welfare rights, social research, teaching, aid agencies, local, national and European Government, social work or housing.
