This qualification is targeted towards apprentices or trainees aspiring to become qualified plumbing and heating engineers. It allows the candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required for employment and/or career progression in the plumbing sector. It tests both practical and knowledge based skills in a realistic working environment.
When you have successfully completed this qualification you will be qualified to the minimum level currently accepted within the sector. Please note that it is essential to have a plumbing work placement to student on this course (companies to be vetted and monitored to ensure safety of students as per Government policy).
Each unit has an emphasis to plumbing and consists of the following:
- Unit 201 Carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
- Unit 202 Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
- Unit 203 Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
- Unit 204 Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical service engineering
- Unit 205 Understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
- Unit 206 Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance technique
- Unit 207 Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
- Unit 208 Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
- Unit 209 Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
- Unit 210 Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
- 019 Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
- 020 Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems

Course programme

Units 201-210 are delivered through a combination of classroom and workshop activities. Assessment is carried out through continuous assessment of practical activities, practical assessments and written assessments.

Units 019 and 020 are assessed in the workplace.


Successful students can progress to an Advanced Plumbing Apprenticeship at Level 3

No formal qualifications are required for entry, however all applicants will be interviewed as part of the selection process. During the interview academic grades and results of an aptitude test are considered prior to recommending an appropriate level. No skills or experience are necessary prior to commencing the course.
