Dear Colleague,

After eight successful intakes the National Sea Training Centre's and Lloyd's Maritime Academy's Diploma in Ship Superintendency by distance learning, continues to be a popular and well received course. So much so, that we are delighted to offer this course with a choice of two start dates in 2009.

The changing nature of the marine industry and the increasing technicalities involved has meant that shipping has become increasingly complicated. As a result of this, and the complex employment structures involved, not all companies can afford the in-house training programmes and mentoring systems that existed in the past.

The maritime world is truly international and in order to give marine professionals every opportunity to study, the chosen method of delivery is distance learning. This eliminates geographical boundaries and barriers and matches the busy working life of our students.

This course is intended as a qualification for marine professionals worldwide, who may be currently at sea and wish to progress to a shore based position, those currently serving as ship superintendents or those who have a purely academic interest in gaining a qualification that will assist with their own personal and professional development. This course meets the Royal Institution of Navel Architects (RINA) requirements for Continuing Professional Development and is recognised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) as contributing to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) needs of its members. The course is also supported and approved by The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, The International Federation of Ship Masters' Associations and The Marine Society and Sea Cadets.

Successful completion of the course also provides a credit rating towards an Open University undergraduate degree as well as towards the units required to obtain a masters degree at Middlesex University. The Open University offers further study by distance learning and Middlesex University has in place a work-based learning degree programme for successful candidates of the Diploma.

We are confident you will find that this unique Diploma provides you with a level of knowledge and skill that will benefit you and your employer or prospective employer. We look forward to receiving your application to enrol.
