The Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Education is for people interested in a career in the outdoor industry and in developing their existing outdoor activity leadership skills, knowledge, qualifications and experience. The program offers progression for students who have completed the first year programme in outdoor education and training or to individuals who already have the relevant level of experience provided by the first year programme.

About this course

You need a Level 2 qualification related to the outdoor industry, e.g. year 1 programme or appropriate experience of working within the outdoor industry (which includes instructing groups) and have 4 GCSEs at C or above (or equivalent level 2 qualification).

Course programme

What will I study on the course?

The Level 3 Diploma in Outdoor Education will look to develop existing leadership and personal skills in kayaking, canoeing, mountaineering, high ropes, hill walking, team-building, orienteering, and rock climbing. Facilitation skills and teaching methods will be developed using external client groups through our Kirkley Hall Outdoor Activity Centre.

Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure

Skills for Land-Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Skills for Water-Based Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions

Alternative Pursuits for Outdoor Adventure

Level 3 students are also trained and qualified as High Ropes and zip-wire Instructors at our Kirkley Hall Activity Centre. In addition, students will also complete the assessment expedition for the SLUK Level 3 Basic Expedition Leader (BEL) Award, work towards BCU 3 and 4 star awards and complete a BCU fundamentals workshop as part of the program. BCU Foundation Safety and Rescue Training is also covered and students will have the opportunity to gain the pre-requisites for a range of NGB's, e.g. MLT SPA, BCU L1 and L2 Coach, MLT ML(S).

This qualification may also be linked to, and completed in conjunction with, another L3 course, e.g. NCFE.

Additional information

The course is run over 2 to 3 days per week, and is run as part of a full time - one year programme (September - July).At least one full day a week is dedicated to outdoor adventurous activities.In addition to the timetabled activities, there are a number of residential trips and expeditions through the year which include visits to the Scottish Highlands, Snowdonia and the Lake District. There are also opportunities for students to participate in expeditions abroad.
