Course programme

The areas that will be covered within this qualification are:
* Health and Safety - across all units and how to prepare yourself as well as your clients
* Client consultation - communication skills, contra-indications as well as information about the hair and skin.
* Shampoo and condition the hair and scalp - types of shampoo and conditioner, the hair and skin pH, how shampoo works etc.
* Promote products and services - how to recommend services and products to your clients
* Cut women's hair - the four basic cutting techniques
* Colour and Lighten hair - full head colour, re-growth foil work, the use of semi, quasi and permanent colours
* Perm and Neutralise - different types of perm winds and how the lotion affects the hair structure
* The Art of dressinig hair - blow waving, finger dry, setting, pin curls, hair up, competition and prom hair, etc.
* Cut men's hair - different cutting techniques for men
* Salon Reception duties - how to answer the telephone, make appointments, greet clients, take messages, be in charge of the daily takings and promote sales of products.

All learners will cover these units which will allow the learner to experience the different skills that are required to work within the Hairdressing or Barbering Industry. Who is the course for?

The Level 2 Diplomas in Hairdressing and Barbering are suitable for people who have taken a level 1 qualification, and/or have been working in the industry and are looking to accredit their skills and knowledge.
The qualification covers a very wide range of areas related to the skills and knowledge required for preparing to work in the Hairdressing and Barbering Industry.

Yes, you need Level 1 Hairdressing or a grade 'D' GCSE or equivalent. (Evidence of previous qualifications must be provided)

What will I study on the course?

You will study current cutting techniques, colouring, perming, creative styling and the wider skills needed to work in the hairdressing industry. Ideal if you are interested in improving your existing hairdressing skills.

How is the course organised

You will be in college three days per week and will need to have a placement day in a hairdressing salon.

How will my progress be assessed?

There will be practical assessments, you can gain a pass, merit or distinction, and this will depend on your practical skill as well as Health and Safety, aftercare advice and communication skills. Your theory work gives you the under pinning knowledge of how to produce the practical and will consist of either on-line tests, assignments or a mixture of the two.

Can I gain any extra qualifications while on the course?

You may also have the opportunity to complement your studies with other qualifications that will help you gain employment, including Functional skills

Can I receive any financial support whilst I am studying?

Many of our learners study for free with a "Fee Waiver" when they are in receipt of qualifying benefits or studying a first full Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and meet age restrictions or are aged between 16-18. If you are not entitled to a "Fee Waiver" you may be entitled to receive Learner Support Funds to help with paying your course fees, or if you are aged over 23 and planning to study at Level 3 or 4 you will be able to apply for a 24+ Loan that cover all of your course costs. Higher Education learners are entitled to apply for HE Loans that cover the cost of tuition. In addition, depending on your chosen course of study and individual circumstances, you may be entitled to a maintenance loan.

Please note, from September 2016, anyone over 19 years of age can apply for a loan to cover all course fees for qualifying courses.

All learners can also apply for help with the cost of travel to college and the college may be able to help with the costs of childcare, travel, books, equipment and meals.
