Directing Actors

This revised 5-day workshop is for directors who need to explore the variety of ways available to work effectively with actors. The course allows each director to see how vital these techniques are in order for an actor to create a performance for the screen.

During the course timetable, participants will explore the approaches required for different forms of shooting whilst taking into consideration the artists' needs which include clear and concise direction for characterisation and performance.

It is essential that participants are thoroughly conversant with the grammar, technical aspects, and mechanics of direction in order to gain the maximum benefit from the course.

Practical exercises (shot on DV) and informal discussions will cover all stages of the creation of 'that' performance from an actor - from casting to first reading through blocking, rehearsing, voice levels, key lights, and shooting marks, to the performance itself. At the end of each day there will be feedback, viewing, and an analysis of what has been recorded. Directors will rotate for practical exercises, either observing or acting as an A.D., whilst others rehearse or block.

In order for this course to be extremely beneficial for all concerned the course timetable has been designed for Directors to rehearse, shoot, analyse and observe in order to understand and learn how best to get good performances from actors.

Places on this course are restricted to six directors only.

Rough assembly editing time of what has been shot has been built into the timetable. This is to enable directors to judge performances when they are cut together. This is a workshop and material recorded cannot be used in showreels.
