In order to have a diverse workplace, managers need to first understand how people differ. Surface-level diversity is the differences in people that are immediately observable, measurable, and generally not changeable. Deep-level diversity is those differences between people that are communicated through a worker’s behavior and can only be learned through extended interactions with each other. Examples of surface-level diversity include the workforce’s age, gender, race, ethnicity, and physical disabilities. Examples of deep-level diversity include someone’s level of extraversion, emotional stability, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to new experiences.
Managing a workplace diversity program starts by understanding the basic difference that exist between people. This course discusses these differences at the surface-level, as well as some common personality differences.
