COURSE VIDEO Become a dentist 2:27 The Doctor of Dental Medicine is a graduate-entry program qualifying graduates to practice as dentists. It is presented across four years utilising postgraduate methods of delivery and assessment. Four units of study, each composed of a number of cognate disciplines, have an initial theoretical and practical component, in association with simulated learning, progressing to eventually become exclusively patient-based clinical education in Year 4.
Included in the degree is a compulsory Research Unit commencing in Year 1 with a research methods and research literacy component and culminates in the final year with the presentation of research in a publishable format.
This program has evolved due to changing market demands for newly graduated dentists to confidently and ethically assume clinical practice and assume leadership positions in the profession, as well as be adequately prepared to continue with further research if they wish.
The first year and half is spent on the Camperdown campus and in the Sydney Dental Hospital with intermittent visits to the Westmead Centre for Oral Health.
Much of this time constitutes the Integrated Life Science Unit of Study, interspersed with simulated dental clinical learning and some patient contact. From the second semester in year 2, students will increasingly engage in patient-based clinical training. The clinical education will take place in the two main academic hospitals and there is a compulsory community-based component through rotations in rural, remote and metropolitan dental clinics.
Working within Dentistry one must possess a number of attributes in order to be successful in Dentistry. We have attached a list of inherent requirements that students should meet before considering Dentistry as a career.
