The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Sydney Business School may be undertaken within all disciplines, or within a research centre, and in association with one of our dynamic research groups. The degree requires the satisfactory completion of six coursework units of study and research and writing toward a thesis of 80,000 words on an approved topic, under the supervision of an academic panel.

Admission requirements
A successful applicant for admission to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy will hold a bachelor's degree with first or upper second class honours in the proposed field of study from the University of Sydney or equivalent, or a master's degree with at least an average result of 80 per cent with a 25 per cent research component in the proposed field of study from the University of Sydney or equivalent. Other factors taken into consideration when assessing a research application are the quality of the research proposal and the availability of a supervisor within the faculty.
All applicants must submit a research proposal. This should be a written proposal (1500 words) detailing the proposed area of research, the techniques to be used, data sources and bibliography. Applicants who are unsure about their research proposal may contact the appropriate postgraduate research coordinator for a preliminary evaluation.
