Course programme
General Description:
This is a joint Middlesex University and New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling programme starting in January 2007. It leads to a Professional Doctorate or a Masters degree in Existential Counselling Psychology. The doctoral programme will also be submitted for accreditation with the British Psychological Society, so that it will, in due course, lead to chartering as a counselling psychologist.
Curriculum:
The four year programme will require your presence at College for one day a week for three terms a year. There will be some weekend workshops to attend as well. In addition you will need to be in a continuous supervised counselling psychology placement for the latter three years of the programme, as well as producing a number of substantial pieces of qualitative research, case studies and a final dissertation. We require you to be in on going personal therapy as part of your training (at least 150 hours in total). The programme will be offered on an intensive basis for distance learners. The first two years of the programme, at level four, can be taken either on a Wednesday, on a Saturday or on an intensive basis. The last two years of the programme, at level five, can only be taken on an intensive basis, though some of the required elements will also be offered on a Wednesday.
Entry Requirements:
You will need to have a good Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and hold the graduate basis for registration (GBR) with the British Psychological Society to enroll on this programme. In addition we require you to have completed an introductory course in psychotherapy and counselling such as the New School's own Foundation Course. If you have not yet done such a course you may enroll initially on our Wednesday evening or intensive foundation course. After receiving your application we will invite you to a personal interview with the Director of the programme. In this interview we will consider your suitability for the theoretical, practical, clinical and research elements of the programme. Equally important is an interest in philosophy and evidence of a self-reflective life-style. Students who have previously studied at a postgraduate level may be eligible for advanced standing on the postgraduate programme. This will be assessed on an individual basis at interview.
