The course aims to provide beginners with basic drawing and painting skills. Tuition is given in how to use a range of drawing and painting materials centred on exercises involving direct observation of a variety of subjects

What modules are covered?

Drawing 

Because experience of drawing is an essential component of painting, we begin with several drawing exercises and then move on to painting as the term progresses. Beginning with line drawing we then proceed to tonal drawing (the use of light and shade). You will get an opportunity to explore a variety of media including pencils, charcoal, chalks and ink. All drawing materials, including paper are provided.

Painting 

You will be doing a series of practical exercises to introduce you to paint, painting equipment and their use. 

Advice and information will be given on which equipment you will need. If you are completely new to painting please don’t spend a lot of money on equipment or materials until the tutor has had a chance to advise you on what to buy. If you already have some of your own painting gear please bring it in at some point so the tutor can assess anything else you may need to aquire.

The course is enrolled termly. Each term has its own programme content to enable students to develop their skills throughout the academic year. Though desirable, it is not essential to have joined the class at the beginning of the
year, as each term will involve activities new to everyone
