Develop your powers of observation and broaden your use of media, materials and approaches to drawing.

Tutors on this course firmly believe that there is no such thing as someone who cannot draw – inspiration and experimentation will lead you to understand how and why artists and designers value drawing in their practice.

Course programme

What to bring

All the asterisked items need to be brought along to the first session. A few extra items may be required during the course, but these will be discussed at a later date and kept to a minimum.

  • A2 size pad of white cartridge paper – tear out rather than ring bound.
  • A2 Drawing Board – lightweight – does not need to be shop bought. We also have some here that can be borrowed.
  • Set of pencils; H, HB, B, 2B, 4B, 6B being the minimum. It would be wise to have at least two HBs and Bs.
  • Few sticks (or box) of willow charcoal, ideally in different thicknesses.
  • Putty rubber (usually sold in little boxes). An ordinary eraser would also be useful.
  • 30cm (minimum) ruler. A plastic one is adequate but a metal one is ideal.
  • Roll of masking tape. DIY stores often sell them at a better price than art shops.
  • Pencil sharpener. A scalpel or Stanley knife with spare blades is ideal.
  • Pair of scissors.
  • Fine/medium fibre tipped pens. Can be purchased in stationers or art shops.
  • Selection of extra drawing materials in neutral tones, eg conte crayons, graphite sticks, chinagraph crayons, felt tips, compressed charcoal, biros. If unsure about what to buy, don't worry as advice will be given once the course commences. If you do buy any of these items bring them along to the first session.
  • Few sheets of A2 white card.
  • An A4 sketchbook either loose leaf or hard bound (this is ideal, but more expensive). This item is optional. If you have one bring it along to the first lesson.
