The dyer is the one who carries out the dyeing operation, through which to give or change color to materials by means of a bath, a liquid in which dyes are dissolved. It is applied to many materials such as: leather, skins, wood, hair, but the most important area is that which affects textile fibers, yarns and fabrics. The history of dyeing is closely linked to that of weaving, applications, discoveries, techniques go hand in hand in the two fields, with greater attention, for dyeing, to aesthetic and decorative needs, and therefore to the dictates of fashion. It is very difficult today to reconstruct the history of dyeing with a certain precision, but it can be said without fear of contradiction that coloring plants have had immense importance in economic and political history, in cultural exchanges, in the arts and in the development of sciences and techniques. Some plants, the best known for their coloring properties, have been cultivated and traded, becoming important economic agents and decisively influencing the development of entire regions, causing wars, immense fortunes and equally immense bankruptcies.
