About this course

Academic entry requirements:
A first or upper second class UK honours degree or internationally recognised equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Physics or Maths.

English requirements:
IELTS 6.5 (with not less than 6.0 in each of the four components).
TOEFL 580 (paper-based test) or 237 (computer-based test) with a score of not less than 4 in the TWE or 92 (internet-based test) with not less than 21 in each of the components.

Overview

In addition to developing specific subject expertise, the general aims of this programme are:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • To develop thorough understanding of and high competence in the materials covered in the selected programme.
  • To develop a critical understanding of the uncertainty, ambiguity and limits of knowledge and how these may affect analyses of, and solutions to, engineering problems.
  • To develop the ability to locate, analyse, interpret, criticise and report on scientific information from published sources at specialist level.

Intellectual Skills

  • To develop the ability to apply the concepts and principles of mechanical engineering science to the solution of engineering problems in complex (both familiar and unpredictable) professional and research environments.
  • To complete a substantial full-time research project (or equivalent for part-time) in an area relevant to the selected programme, in sufficient depth to form a dissertation.
  • To be able to employ a range of techniques to review and critically analyse information concerning engineering problems and to propose and implement solutions in a professional manner.

Professional Practical Skills

  • To be able to employ a range of techniques to review and critically analyse information concerning engineering problems and to propose and implement solutions in a professional manner.

Programme Description

The programme comprises specialist taught units in the first semester, combinations of taught units and a group design project during the second semester, and a research project leading to the submission of a dissertation for the remainder of the course.
