e-Assessments - Law & Ethics
Introduction
The e-Assessments are two completely separate 1 hour online tests, one testing Law and the other Ethics, that you must sit and pass, as well as the four traditional style tax papers, to become a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).
You are required to answer 60 online multiple choice/multiple response questions in 1 hour for each e-Assessment. To pass an e-Assessment you must get 40 of the 60 questions right.
The e-Assessments are set at around 50 centres within the UK and can be sat at any time, not just at the traditional May and November exam sittings that are used for the tax papers.
The aim of the Law e-Assessment is to test knowledge of law within the relevant areas of tax. The aim of the Ethics e-Assessment is to test your understanding of the obligations of a Chartered Tax Adviser in the area of professional responsibilities and ethics.
Pre-requisites
In order to sit the e-Assessments you must have registered as a student with the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT). As we are completely independent of the CIOT we cannot do this for you. The CIOT handle all of the administration relating to the real examinations.
Our objective is to provide you with first-class training materials and courses in order to help you pass the examinations. It would normally make sense to get the e-Assessments out of the way first but you can sit them at the same time as studying for your tax papers should you wish. However, you must have sat and passed the e-Assessments before the closing date for examination entry for the sitting at which you wish to sit your last tax paper. This means that if you wish to sit your final tax paper in May 2010 you should have sat and passed the e-Assessments by 28 February 2010. For a November sitting the cut-off date is 31 August.
