This qualification is a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) for apprentice electricians. It involves learning the skills and knowledge needed to do the electrician’s job. You will learn how to organise work and identify and prevent problems. NVQs are based on national occupational standards, which the learner must meet to be competent in a particular task. The achievement of NVQs will encourage an employee to value their contribution to the workplace, and it will develop their skills and potential. This qualification requires occupational evidence.
This qualification is suited to learners undertaking Summit Skills apprenticeship frameworks.
The qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to install electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment. The qualification is made up of knowledge units and performance units.
The units cover a wide range of topics including health and safety, environmental technology systems, overseeing and organising the work environment, planning, preparing and installing electrical systems and equipment, terminating and connecting conductors, cables and flexible cords, inspecting, testing, commissioning and fault diagnosis and correction. Integral to this qualification is the Electrotechnical Occupational Competence Unit which is assessed by the AM2.
The learner must complete 17 mandatory units to achieve the Level 3 Diploma and achieve 104 credits.
As from 14 October 2016, learners who have achieved a qualification recognised as an alternative to Essential Skills, as detailed under the apprenticeship framework, are not required to undertake Essential Skills qualification. However, if a learner’s WEST assessment identifies that the learner has essential skills deficits which would inhibit progress through the framework, this needs to be addressed.
