About this course

On graduating, students have the opportunity to progress to the final year of the BA Early Childhood (Single Honours) at UoWTSD.

A related Level 3 qualification with good literacy and numeracy skills, preferably with a grade C or equivalent in GCSE English and Maths.
During the course, you will be required to undertake a minimum of 300 hours of work-based learning each year so you will need to be employed in an appropriate sector (ie Foundation Phase 3-7 in schools or day care, day nurseries, sessional care, Flying Start groups etc).

Course programme

This course is delivered over two academic years. In Year 1, you will attend college on a Tuesday (4pm-9pm) and a Thursday (3pm-9pm.)

Level 4 modules (year one):

  • study skills and introduction
  • human development: through the early years
  • the principles of working with young children and families
  • introduction early literacy: young readers, young writers
  • the young child’s health and well-being in the early years
  • work placed practice 1: effective working with young children

Level 5 modules (year two):

  • research skills for learning
  • whatever the weather: Learning outdoors for young children
  • early numeracy 'sums and stuff': through play
  • Iaith Chwarae: how to use Welsh in early childhood and promote bilingualism
  • leadership skills for effective practice through collaborative working
  • work placed practice 2: effective working with young children

Additional information

UCAS course code: 5G12 Tuition fees are £9,000 per year. For academic year 2019/20, students will need to get a tuition fee loan for the full amount. The College is offering a £1,000 bursary per year towards full time HE courses starting in September 2019 (this is dependant on satisfactory course progression). If when you apply you realise that you have completed part of the learning you will be undertaking at another institution and have certification for this learning then please advise the Admissions Office. For the placement element of this course, it is likely that you will require a DBS check which costs approximately £44.
