The BSc (Hons) Early Childhood Studies (with Foundation Year) is designed to help you to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to succeed in your studies with the University of Wolverhampton at degree level and beyond. During your Foundation Year you will develop skills appropriate to University study such as finding and using information, working collaboratively with others, challenging and debating ideas and expressing yourself with greater confidence.

The Early Childhood Studies degree will develop your skills and knowledge required for a range of careers working with children, their families and the services that support them. The course will draw on a range of disciplines such as history, psychology, education, sociology, welfare and social policy.

The course is suitable for people new to this area or experienced staff searching for career development. The course takes account of the ecology of children’s lives in studying the complexities of family life and of children’s development from conception onwards and the significance of childhood across cultures and societies.

Work experience placements are an integral part of the course and can be negotiated in a variety of settings such as schools, nurseries, community care centres, hospitals, social services, libraries, children’s centres, and other relevant settings. The course will consider theory in relation to the implications for practice and enable you to evaluate and develop appropriate pedagogical approaches to work with children and their families and to consider ethical principles and high quality practice.

Reflect upon a range of philosophical, historical, psychological, sociological and consider how these underpin different understanding of children and childhood.


Demonstrate the knowledge and awareness of the skills needed for different pedagogical approaches when working with children, families, communities and other professionals as well as acting as an advocate for children, families and communities including promoting children’s welfare and safety needs.


Recognise and critically analyse issues in relation to rights, diversity, equity and inclusion in relation to working with children, families and communities in the UK and globally.


Make critical judgements and evaluations about key concepts, theories and principles including current debates in the area of childhood studies and research in child development and analyse data effectively and interpret this arriving at supported conclusions.


To communicate clearly to a range of audiences for a range of purposes including the ability to take the lead, support, plan and work collaboratively with others.


You will also develop and consolidate a range of employability skills, including sharing information, working with and in groups, presenting information, digital literacy and critical thinking skills

Students will be expected reflect on and develop their practice during the placement modules during the course demonstrating both knowledge and understanding of appropriate ideas relating to the care and education of children as they apply to practice, as well as an ability to work with children and adults in a particular setting. Students successfully completing the assessed module at level 5 will be awarded BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies which meets the DfE full and relevant criteria. The practice award therefore will not be stand-alone and integrated into the early childhood studies course

2019 Entry

Level 2 English, this could be GCSE Grade 4 or above OR equivalent.

Course programme

Teaching and learning is designed to support digital literacy through use of a range of on-line tools, such as virtual learning environments and e-portfolios and you are encouraged to share knowledge and be enterprising with your ideas.

PLACEMENT

The placement journey on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies course was developed following consultation between the then Department for Education & Skills (DfES 2004 now DfE) and the Early Childhood Studies Degree National Network. The placement modules at each level of study provides students with an opportunity to work alongside professional practitioners in Ofsted registered settings, developing their knowledge, skills and competence in working with young children.

Students will be required to identify and attend an appropriate registered setting (0-8 years) in order to experience, participate in and develop competence in a range of tasks associated with practice in an early years setting. They will be expected to reflect on and develop their practice during these modules during the course.

  • 150 hours at level 4 (with a named professional partner) linking to the module 'Developing Professionals'
  • 150 hours at level 5 (with a named professional partner) linking to the module 'Professional Studies'
  • 50 hours at level 6 (with professional partner)) linking to the module 'Leading Quality'

Students will be expected to reflect on and develop their practice during these modules during the course demonstrating both knowledge and understanding of appropriate ideas relating to the care and education of children as they apply to practice, as well as an ability to work with children and adults in a particular setting.

Students successfully completing the assessed module at level 5 will be awarded BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies which meets the DfE full and relevant criteria. The practice award therefore will not be stand-alone and integrated into the early childhood studies course. This award is recognised by the Department for Education full and relevant criteria meaning that students on completion of their course can be counted in the ratios at levels 2 and 3.
