Studying in Amsterdam, a city with a rich early music scene
The Early Music Department at the CvA plays an important role in the international world of the historically informed performance practice. The excellent performance level of the department is supported by thorough historical research and the latest insights into working with historical sources. Our broad orientation within the conservatory is vital; the Early Music Department is part of the Classical Music Department and also works on an incidental basis with the Jazz Department. Right from the first academic year, the chamber music programme forms a substantial part of student schedules.
The Sweelinck Baroque Orchestra rehearses repertory from the Baroque and Classical periods once a week. Each year three projects are organized, with public concerts in churches and halls in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Leiden and Alkmaar. These projects, each lasting a week, are coached by renowned early music specialists from the Netherlands and beyond.
The Early Music Department maintains close contact with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century.
