This is a one year course that prepares learners to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. The course involves both class based learning and experience in childcare settings. A variety of teaching methods will build your communication, teamwork and study skills within the vocational framework. The qualification achieved enables you to work in a supervised capacity across a variety of childcare and education settings.

How will I study?
The course is divided into four main themes, Theme 1- Introducing the role of the early years practitioner, Theme 2 – Legislation, framework and professional practice, Theme 3 – Play, development and learning for school, Theme 4 – Professional development. These themes provide the focus for both class based and practice based learning. If you are a full time student aged 16-18 you will follow a study programme which will consist of your main course, enterprise and enrichment activities, English and Maths as well as work experience.
How will I be taught?
Teaching will take place both in the classroom and in placement. Class based lessons will include group work, self-study and practical tasks. Within the placement, learning will be supported by a Placement Supervisor.
How will I be assessed?
All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or set tasks. Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.
