Course Structure and Content

In year one you join all Education Studies students in a core module that introduce key concepts and skills that underpin the subject. You will also study a compulsory module that explores how young children play and learn. You are required to study a second subject from our modular programme alongside education, for the first year.

In year two you will consider more deeply the current issues in education in a second core module. This module incorporates a placement in a school or early years setting. A second compulsory module develops your understanding of the care, development and learning of young children. A wide range of optional modules allow you to develop other interests related to teaching, classrooms, diversity, inclusion, educational policy, arts education, the internet, global and international perspectives in education. A 'professional practice' module is available, which will enable you to meet occupational standards in early years education You can also opt to study abroad in another European country under the ERASMUS scheme.

In year three you are required to select one early-years based module and a research-based module: you will identify your own topic to research and will be assigned a tutor who will support you throughout the year. There is also wide range of optional modules available taught by expert staff on topics such as childhood, international education, arts education and education policy.
