Introduction:
This is a beginners course for those who wish to gain a formal IT qualification. It aims to to equip you with the computing skills necessary to operate software at a basic level. This is a foundation (Level 1) European Computer Driving License (ECDL) qualification.
Study Mode & Location:
This part-time course is delivered in a 60 hour course and will be held at the majority of our Community Venues. It is also available at our Fulwood Campus (St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR1 8UR).
Course Content:
You will study the following modules:
Module 1 - IT Security for Users
. This theory based unit covers aspects such as how to protect your computer from viruses etc., how it is used in society and the laws that govern the use of data and computers.
Module 2 - IT User Fundamentals
. This covers all aspects of using the File Management software, starting and closing down a computer, saving, naming, moving and copying files from different locations.
Module 3 - Web Browsing and Communication.
This covers searching the Internet, saving files and using the correct tools to browse and extract information. E-mail packages will be used to send, receive, reply and forward e-mails. Adding attachments and saving in different formats will also be looked at.- You will need to attend each of the classes in order to successfully complete this course. Homework may be given for some of the units, but this would not be more than 2 hours extra work per week.
Assessment:
Module 1 is a theory module and a multi-choice paper is taken as a final test. This is then sent away to the British Computer Society (BSC) for external marking. The test currently has 36 questions and the pass mark is 75%.
Module 2 and 3 are assessed via practical assignments and a task-based practical test. Your tutor will mark this and a pass mark of 75% is required. Assessments are usually taken when the learning for that Unit has been completed.
Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course allows progression to the ECDL Extra - Level 2.
How To Apply
You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
