About this course

This interdisciplinary course provides broad research training in ecology, evolution and conservation, focusing on fundamental concepts and theory, and their application to conservation and biodiversity science. Based at Silwood Park Campus, an internationally renowned centre of excellence for ecological research, the taught course covers a range of topics, each taught by a leading researcher in that field. These internationally recognised experts use their own research as model systems to illustrate the fundamental scientific principles that underpin the study topics. External visitors from a range of conservation organisations will highlight the issues around applying science to practical conservation.  You also complete a five-month research project on a topic of your choice. The MSc course offers a wider range of instruction across a large set of research areas, allowing you to gain a clear insight into your own research interests from among current research topics. The MRes course hits the ground running: the greater focus on independent research allows you to specialise in your existing research interests. Both courses are suitable for those interested in a career in applied ecology or conservation, or in preparing for a PhD.

All applicants must apply online. You can usually apply for up to two courses, although your second choice will only be considered if your first-choice application is unsuccessful. Most courses don't have a formal closing date, but popular courses close when they are full, so you should apply early to avoid disappointment. There may also be funding deadlines that apply to you. You will need to upload documents with your applications, which may include transcripts and degree...

Course programme

Modules shown are for the current academic year, and are subject to change depending on your year of entry.

The course comprises a series of week-long compulsory modules covering the fundamental concepts and applications of ecology, evolution and conservation:

  • Introduction to ecology, evolution and conservation, including hands-on involvement in a series of research case studies
  • Conservation and management, including visits and discussion workshops on case studies of conservation in action with professionals from conservation bodies
  • Evolutionary analysis, covering state-of-the-art approaches to solving evolutionary problems
  • Ecology and ecosystems, applying ecological principles and methods covered in earlier elements to complex systems and real ecosystems
  • Statistical computing, focusing on analytical skills essential for a career in modern whole-organism biology

You also undertake a research project of approximately 22 weeks, which will provide extensive training in research skills and scientific publication.
