Our BSc Economics is designed to provide you with a core of rigorous, technically demanding, yet applications-oriented, skills in economics. You will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to equip you for professions requiring economic literacy and the analytical tools expected from a top economics degree.
This is a rigorous course that combines an open admissions policy with high standards. Where there are gaps in your previous education we will fill those gaps, but you will also achieve the same standard of training in the core skills of economics as in any other economics degree.
This programme is also available for part-time evening study over four years.

About this course
This programme will prepare you for a wide range of jobs in both the private and public sectors. Our graduates go on to develop careers in banking and finance, the public sector and industry, both in the UK and overseas, as well as continuing on to postgraduate studies.
We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

Course programme
This flexible programme is made up of 30-credit modules totalling 360 credits over three years. You can choose between two routes: normal and econometrics.
In Year 1, you take four compulsory modules, choosing between Quantitative Techniques I and Introductory Quantitative Techniques.
In Year 2:
- Normal route: you take four compulsory modules, choosing between Quantitative Techniques II and Quantitative Techniques for Applied Economics
- Econometrics route: you take four compulsory modules, choosing two from Microeconomic Theory and Policy, Macroeconomic Theory and Policy, and International Economics.
In Year 3:
- Normal route: you take one compulsory module, choosing between Quantitative Techniques III and Applied Statistics and Econometrics, and choose three option modules
- Econometrics route: you take one compulsory module and choose three option modules, one of which must be Microeconomics/Macroeconomics if you did not take Microeconomic Theory and Policy/Macroeconomic Theory and Policy in Year 2.
If you are also interested in studying finance and/or accounting as well as economics you may want to consider alternatively the BSc Financial Economics or BSc Finance with Accounting programmes offered by the Department. There is an opportunity to switch into one of these programmes at the end of Year 1, should your interests change during your first year.
