About this course

An Economics degree adds prestige to your CV and could be your stepping stone to a lucrative graduate training scheme or a well-rewarded financial consultancy role. Economics is among the top three subjects to take for delivering a ‘professional premium’ – the difference in salaries between graduates and non-graduates – of almost £10,000 (Complete University Guide statistics for 2017 graduates).

Economics graduates with an understanding of business and leadership are in great demand across the public, private and voluntary sectors worldwide. As well as roles in international business, consultancy and finance, you could pursue opportunities in government departments, development agencies, charities and not-for-profit organisations.

Our focus on problem-solving and practical economic analysis extends your career scope further still, opening doors to a much broader range of opportunities than with a more conventional Economics qualification. Some graduates go on to follow careers in areas such as HR, marketing, PR and sales.

GCSE Maths and English are preferred, however if you don't have these qualifications you will be able to undertake Maths and English at L2 as part of your course of study.

What you will study

To complete the BA (Hons) Economics with Foundation Year, you'll study the following modules:

Foundation year

You will study modules such as:

  • Business Communication and Decision Making
  • Contemporary Issues in Business
  • Data Analysis for Business
  • Study skills for Business

And you will choose two options from:

  • Law
  • Sociology
  • Political Studies
  • Fundamentals of Human Behaviour

If you don’t have either English or Maths GCSE, you will need to substitute one or two of the above for a module in English and/or Maths.

Stage one

You will study modules such as:

  • Introductory Microeconomics
  • Introductory Mathematics for Economics
  • Academic Skills for Accounting, Finance and Business Economics
  • Market Failure Analysis
  • Introduction to Macroeconomic Concepts and Data
  • Finance and Business Performance
Stage two

You will study modules such as:

  • Applied Intermediate Macroeconomics
  • Data Analysis
  • Industrial Economics
  • Public and Third Sector Economics
  • Current Debates in Applied Economic Theory

You’ll also choose one of the following options:

  • Improving Operations Performance
  • Marketing Communication

You can choose to take an optional placement year between stages two and three.

Stage three

You will study modules such as:

  • International Business Economics
  • Economics of Sustainable Business Growth
  • Applied Economics Project

You will also choose two modules from options such as:

  • Financial Risk Management
  • Marketing Across Cultures
  • International Purchasing and Supply Chain Management
  • Investing and Financial Market Behaviour
