It is quite likely that you already edited films before selecting this specialisation. Many students have already mastered the basic techniques. At the Film Academy, editing is seen as a substantive subject. Besides learning how to operate the technical equipment, you will learn how to tell a story. As an editor, you will have a huge influence on the final product. This is even more relevant for documentary films, since the story on those films often only emerges during editing.

Ally to the director
Editing shapes a story, told through images and sounds. You make essential choices in how the audiovisual material is structured. You put it in the right order, make sure that the best takes of a recording are used, and that it forms a logical unit. Aspects such as continuity, sequence of images, contents, rhythm and scene transitions can make or break a film. How do you edit a dialogue? How can you cut a scene in such a way that it makes the tension rise? When do you switch to a close-up? And of course you need to consider the vision of the person in charge, who will often be the director or producer. As an editor, your expertise and creativity is there to serve his vision.
