Education and employment are increasingly driven by globalization; this loss of local control is a worldwide phenomenon. What happens to communities and our sense of belonging in the new “global marketplace?” What does it mean to be a citizen in a consumerist society? This course considers how teachers and schools can respond to these massive social, economic, and technological changes. Topics include cultural identity, social justice, and human and ecological development in both rich and poor countries.

Course programme

In this course, we will investigate the complex and somewhat problematic idea of community. At first, it is common for most of us to think about community as a place of safety and security. However, to speak of any collective of people as a “community” tends to assume a sameness that inevitably blurs and even obscures the important differences between individuals and sub-groups. By pluralizing the idea of community, we can begin to look at the differences that exist within educational sites and geographic locations.
