The Foundation Degree offers comprehensive coverage of the knowledge and skills required by those supporting learning and teaching. It is practical and focused on the workplace.
The course develops understanding of teaching and learning, working in education, and behaviour management. It also covers skills required for effective communication, selfdevelopment and career progression.
A good deal of learning on this course will take place in the workplace using study guides and the experience of colleagues. You will have a personal tutor to assist you and will be expected to attend college every week for either a morning, afternoon or evening session. Further tutor support is available through email and telephone contact.
The assessment strategy makes use of professionally appropriate, useful and interesting tasks and activities that are at the same time academically rigorous and testing. The assessment strategy adopted provides a wide variety of formats to suit different learning styles and to accommodate your varied workbased situations.

Applicants for the Foundation Degree in Education must:
be employed for at least four hours per week in an appropriate educational role and setting. This employment may be paid or voluntary. Access to the programme is based on learning in the workplace, requiring either paid or voluntary employment in an education role. Course programme



The usual length of the course is two extended years of part-time study. The colleges provide the course on different days and at different times to ensure maximum flexibility. Contact the college of your choice to find out when the teaching sessions are. Each teaching session lasts for four hours but you will be required to study and undertake additional work outside of the taught session.
This course will give you a deeper understanding of:
up to date developments in the education sector;
how to apply key theories and principles of education to your professional practice to meet the specific needs of your employer and your own personal development;
wider professional and academic skills development to help secure your current employment and broaden your future career options.
The course therefore has the following overall aims, which focus on developing your career aspirations and opportunities to:
become a ‘discipline expert’ in education;
develop your professionalism;
develop your wider professional practice;
develop your independent thinking skills.
Employability and career development is at the heart of this work-based programme. Therefore, you will need to be employed in a role that involves supporting education. This employment can be paid or voluntary, and you will need to gain permission from your employer to do this course.
Each module relies on work-based reflection and development, targeting personal and professional improvement throughout in order to help you to reflect and act on your career aspirations.
As a Foundation Degree programme, you will have the opportunity to progress onto the BA Top-up course.
Work-based reflection and development forms a major part of the overall course content and assessment. Throughout the course, you will therefore engage in:
