Course programme

The program aims to produce teachers with deep understanding of the social contexts of education and how they affect students, families, communities and schools. It seeks to cultivate skills and commitments in pre-service teachers to improve student learning outcomes and promote equity in education. Graduates will be prepared to approach the teaching of students in diverse communities with empathy and cultural competence based in critical reflection that strives to continuously improve their own practice.

Admission Information

It is not necessary for applicants to have prior teaching experience or coursework in education, although prior work with children or adolescents is expected. Once applicants have submitted an application, selected applicants will be invited to interview with the appropriate faculty director. While in-person interviews are preferred, it is possible to arrange Skype or phone interviews. See below for specific program requirements. Prospective applicants with questions about their coursework or academic background are urged to contact the appropriate faculty director.

  • Secondary History/Social Studies: Bachelor's degree in history or a social science field. Faculty director: Diane Silva Pimentel
  • Secondary Math: Bachelor's degree in mathematics or closely related field. Faculty director: Diane Silva Pimentel
  • Secondary Science: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, or closely related field. Faculty director: Diane Silva Pimentel
  • GRE General: Not required
  • GRE Subject: Not required

Application Deadline: January 15 (Financial aid applicants must complete a FAFSA and Brown MAT Financial Aid Application by January 15 in order to be considered for financial assistance.)
