Career Opportunities

Education Studies itself is not a teacher training course, but it will prepare you very well for entry to a PGCE teacher training programme, either primary or secondary. It helps you with knowledge of the curriculum, schools and teaching and education policy. It will also give you a broad and critical analysis of the education system and how it works. All this is good for future teachers and you will be better informed with a background in education.

Alternatively, if you don't want to be a teacher, studying education will prepare you for one of the many alternative careers in education. Many companies and organisations now want people who know about education, schools and universities and offer posts such as, education officer, education adviser, educational researcher. There are also many opportunities for posts in various kinds of training which do not require qualified teacher status.

In addition, studying education will give you a range of skills which will equip you for a wide range of careers. You will be able to organise and manage groups, work in professional situations and negotiate and liaise with people, present information in written and oral form, analyse situations and handle data.

The University College offers a Masters Degree in Education Studies and you may be interested in applying for that course at the end of your undergraduate studies.

Sociology - Combined Award

What is the subject about?

Sociology is the systematic study of people in society. If you're interested in people or the way people behave together, then Sociology could be for you. Sociologists study social life and social change. Sociologists also study the causes and consequences of the way we behave why, for example, do so many young people in Britain and the USA buy trainers and what are the consequences of their actions for people thousands of miles away, who they will probably never meet?

Sociologists are concerned with social problems and social needs and sociology studies organisations such as workplaces or universities; groups such as the British in Spain; and major institutions such as the national health system or the church. Sociologists try to show that while social life is complex, it is comprehensible and can be explained. Because sociology addresses many of the most challenging issues of our time in a relevant way, it is a rapidly expanding subject whose potential is increasingly recognised.

One of Sociology's most distinctive features is that it is not simply concerned with understanding and exploring social phenomena, it is also interested in finding answers. Sociological study challenges many so-called common sense assumptions and taken for granted ideas about everyday life. This leads to a more informed and a better understanding of social relations, social values and social interaction. Sociologists become good at problem-solving. This is one of the reasons why employers are very interested in employing people who have sociology degrees.

If you have an enquiring mind or find it easy to appreciate different points of view, then you may have a flair for sociology.

Career prospects

A sociology degree is useful for any career that involves working with people.

Sociology graduates enter a wide range of careers and national surveys show that there is a very good record of finding work in both the public and the private sector.

Typical careers for which sociology is particularly relevant include: management or administration in central or local government; professional social work; human resource management; leisure and sports management; health service management and health education or nursing; law, the police, penal institutions, probation and after-care of offenders; and work in voluntary welfare organisations.

In addition, sociology affords a good general grounding for those wishing to pursue careers in media or journalism, social research, nursing, librarianship, computing, retail management, marketing, teaching or work in developing countries. Opportunities for further study.

When you have studied Education you will understand how the education system works and the politics of education; who takes decisions about the curriculum and what we learn. You will have a grasp of the social context of education and how poverty affects children's opportunities to learn and the effects of gender, race and ethnicity.

If you are interested in the development of young children, there is a strong Early Years team and you can choose Early Years modules.

Education is about learning and knowledge and you can study the nature of knowledge in the curriculum and how it is learned at different ages and in different situations.

Education is for the future and you can study alternative futures for education and for the world: how can education help us to have a sustainable future on the planet.

Teachers are the key to all this and you get the chance to study the work of teachers and children's learning in placements in educational settings.
